ODE Briefs: Spotlight on transparency

There is international consensus that making aid more transparent is essential to improving effectiveness and accountability. Benefits of greater aid transparency include better donor coordination and reduced administration costs. Even so, there are technical challenges and political risks involved in making aid more transparent. Comparing aid data between donors is difficult and partner countries may be burdened by the need for additional reporting systems. Too much information could be as big an obstacle to effectiveness as too little if it is not provided in useable formats.

This ODE Brief outlines the commitments Australia has made to making aid more transparent. AusAID is making more performance reporting publicly available and supporting country partners to improve data collection. Overall, Australia performs well in international rankings of donor transparency, although there is progress to be made.
